Letter from the Dean of the Fisheries College and Research Institute under the Tamilnadu Veterinary and animal Sciences University

Dear Thiru Prabhu, It was pleasure talking to you this morning. I have been following the column “Farmer’s note book” closely , published in the Hindu papaer and have been wanting to talk to you for a long time. Dr. Seenappa from UAS, Banglaore helped with your contact numbers today and could share some thoughts with you. I have seen the blog wherein most of the stories of this year are available. However , as you indicated to me that you have been doing this column for nearly a decade , it would be worth putting all these stories together and make them available to people , particularly to those involved in agricultural research. Such a publication would further stress on the need for scientists to work closely with farmers and harness the innovative potentials of them for the benefit of the society. I was doing a column entitled ” Farmers as scientists ” for the aquaculture Asia magazine published by NACA ( Network of Aquaculture centres in Asia) , Bangkok and the columns helped to document many innovations of farmers. Unfortunately , I have not been able to continue that column for the past two years and hope to start again. That column created interest among the institutions like FAO and in the upcoming global conference on aquaculture in Phuket from 22-25th September , 10 wherein Dr. Swaminathan has been invited to present the key note address , I will be leading a panel that focuses on ” Farmers innovations , traditional knowledge and dissemination strategies” . In this connection , I hope to quote the Hindu paper example of allocating space for documents farmers innovation and your role in doing this for nearly a decade. I have joined as Dean of the Fisheries College and Research Institute under the Tamilnadu Veterinary and animal Sciences University in Thoothukudi only in May this year and look forward to meet with you at the earliest possible occassionto learn from your rich experience. I wish the students to be taught as part about these path breaking innovations of people and in that regard a good publication from a paper like Hindu – even putting all the case studies together and making it available to people would make significant difference. With kind regards M.C.Nandeesha
